Hearing Loss and the link to Dementia
The UK’s Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) states that there is a strong link between the two conditions and quotes a 2011 study that found that people with mild hearing loss are twice as likely to develop dementia than those with normal hearing. What’s more, those with moderate hearing loss were found to be three times more likely to develop the condition.
The Alzheimer’s Society also links hearing loss to the risk of dementia and is currently funding a three-year research project at University College, London, into how hearing loss can help predict the onset of the condition.
Meanwhile a review of multiple studies into the connection between hearing loss and dementia published in a peer reviewed journal and on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website in the US found that every study linked hearing loss to higher incidence of dementia in older adults.
