Hearing Health

The world is a noisy place. In many cases, hearing health problems can be prevented.

We do noisy jobs during the working day and pursue noisy hobbies in our leisure time yet our Hearing Health is something we often pay too little attention to.
Noise has become a permanent fixture of modern life.
In the last fifty years our average life span has been constantly improving and it is now thought that by 2050 people will routinely live to be one hundred years of age.

Our hearing mechanism hasn’t yet caught up with such a big change in such a (relatively) short space of time. Our hearing capabilities have evolved to cope with a much less noisy and much shorter lifetime of listening.

Hearing Health
Hearing loss due to persistent excessive noise is so slow as to be imperceptible day-to-day, doesn’t hurt and isn’t life threatening.
This causes many people to dismiss the risk until it’s too late, not recognising hearing loss is also irreversible and untreatable.

Not being able to hear properly is, for many, miserable, embarrassing, depressing, expensive, inconvenient, and damaging to general well-being.

Hearing Health – Tinnitus

Tinnitus often accompanies a hearing loss (though not always) and prolonged exposure to noise is one of the primary triggers.

It is estimated that something in the region of 10% of the population suffer from some measure of tinnitus with 1% finding it seriously troublesome to the extent that it affects their day to day lives. It can take many forms from buzzing or ringing in the head or ears to sounding like voices or music. People who suffer with it hear noises that only they can hear – there is no actual noise. The noise can appear to vary in volume and frequency.

Hearing Health – Dementia

A recently published study produced in the Lancet indicates that acting on hearing loss in mid-life may be the largest single controllable factor in development of dementia.

Hearing Health – Depression

Hearing impaired people are known to suffer from feelings of isolation, depression, and withdrawal. Hearing aids, the only solution to Noise Induced Hearing Loss, are expensive, need to be replaced every five years or so and don’t return normal hearing.
